This Week In Canarsie...1990

Canarsie AWARE's former location.
Two crime stories were featured about New York City Housing complexes in Canarsie - BayView and Breukelen. In our January 18 issue seventeen years ago, we reported that a Breukelen Houses man, charged of assault after he allegedly pistol-whipped his girlriend and held her in his apartment, died while in police custody. While the New York City's chief medical examiner noted that the victim used cocaine and alcohol, the case was further investigated by the office of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes.

…Meanwhile, at BayView Houses on January 11, a murder suspect who had barricaded himself inside an apartment for two and a half hours while holding an 18-month-old baby, gave himself up to police. During the standoff, police cordoned off the entire section of the housing complex and told residents not to leave their apartments. Members of the SWAT team geared up with extra powerful rifles, helmets and heavy duty bulletproof vests…

…But we did have some good news in the first few pages of our fine paper. Canarsie AWARE's youth center and out patient drug program geared up to move to a bigger and better home - from a small garage space at 1205 Rockaway Avenue to the Hydrovalve Building on Rockaway Parkway between Foster Avenue and Farragut Road. The highly successful drug and alcohol treatment program still serves the community and operates at the Rockaway Parkway location - and for the past few years, we've been covering their graduation ceremony!…

… If you were living in Canarsie in 1990 and wanted a convenient, fun and exciting place to enjoy concerts, sports and so much more, the Hebrew Educational Society was the place to be. At the time, they were advertising the grand re-opening of their swimming pool. And in honor of the occasion, they presented a special performance of the HES Family Playhouse. Located at 9502 Seaview Avenue, the HES is still advertising with us and they host some of the best events in the community, for children, adult classes and senior citizens.
