This Week In Canarsie...Ten Years Ago

Abbracciamento on the Pier
They say the more things change, the more they stay the same. Well, ten years ago we covered several stories about issues that still echo concern in our beloved community.

…One such story was of a report issued by the State Education Department revealing New York City schools had an alarmingly dismal record of reading scores. The report also showed that public and intermediate schools in Community School District 18, which includes parts of Canarsie and East Flatbush, had the largest citywide decline in reading levels. Phyllis Gonon, School District 18 Superintendent at the time, attributed this decline to "overcrowding."

…A concern about school safety was also brought to our paper that week. Parents complained about the lack of crossing guards at Public School 114, between Glenwood and Farragut roads on Remsen Avenue. An officer with the 69th Precinct's Crossing Guard Program said, "We have a manpower problem at the precinct and we can't possibly afford to release an officer for any other duties."

…One reason for the shortage of officers was because some were assigned to ride city buses during school hours in order to combat the rash of violent incidents that had taken place within a month. In one incident, a youth was pulled off a B-82 bus and beaten on Flatlands Avenue near Remsen Avenue. Two patrol cars collided at the intersection while investigating the matter and four police officers were injured.

…Ten years ago Canarsiens could still enjoy an elegant and intimate dinner at Abbracciamento on the Pier, the perfect place for waterfront dining. They advertised with us regularly - proudly announcing a $19.95 dinner special - and provided free valet parking! Today, the vacant site is still property of Gateway National Recreation Area, and is considered an eyesore to some residents. Recently, Gateway officials told the community that they will only offer the property to a concessionaire if it will be used for recreational purposes.

…Our classified section was still booming in 1997. But in those days, you could rent a one-bedroom apartment for as little as $600 a month. Two bedroom apartments went for only $775! One and two bedroom apartments are now $800 to $1400!
