Canarsie H.S. To Welcome Homeless Cats and Dogs

Animal Care and Control (AC&C) is teaming up with students to save the lives of dogs and cats. On Saturday, January 13th from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Canarsie High School will be housing an AC&C Pet Adoption Event. Approximately 25 dogs and cats will be there looking to find a loving permanent home.

The event is the result of a unique partnership between Canarsie High School and AC&C. Since September, ten Canarsie High School students have volunteered weekly at AC&C's Brooklyn shelter located at 2336 Linden Boulevard in East New York. The students are responsible for walking the dogs, socializing the cats, ensuring that the cages are kept clean and assisting potential adopters.

Matt Wildman, AC&C's youth coordinator says "These youths have shown an extraordinary commitment to the well-being of the animals in our care. The students have also assumed responsibility for the community outreach involved in this event."

AC&C is the organization responsible for the city's municipal shelter system. Each year, 44,000 animals enter the city's shelters waiting for a loving home.

"This event is a great opportunity to raise the community's awareness about the students of Canarsie High School and determined to make sure these animals find homes," stated senior Alcides Torres. Potential adopters must be 18 years of age and have valid proof of New York State residence. Adoption fees range from $28 for cats to $72 for dogs.
