Crime scene investigators place markers for spent bullets on pavement on street at corner of Seaview and Pennsylvania avenues. Police from the 75th Precinct, along with Brooklyn Homicide detectives, are searching for a suspect or suspects responsible for shooting a man to death just south of the Starrett City/Spring Creek housing complex area last week.

According to a report from a spokesman for NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, local precinct police responded to a call from witnesses in their apartments in the complex's nearby buildings shortly after 11 p.m. saying they had heard shots fired, apparently in the intersection of the two major streets in the southern section of the complex, just north of the Belt Parkway.

When the officers arrived, they discovered the body of Luis Avelez, 34, lying in the street with "numerous wounds to the torso," the spokesman said.

Police canvassed the area and found at least 13 shell casings near the body. They did not release the victim's address.

Avelez was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information is asked to call the 75th Precinct Detective Squad at 1-718-827-3549 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.
