Question: Since the shootings at Virginia Tech, Brooklyn College has decided to beef up campus safety by allowing the security officers to carry guns. Do you think this is a good idea? Why?
|"I think security guards carrying guns is going to make things worse. If there is a shootout, both sides will get hurt. At least, if only one side has guns, the other side will back down - and catch them off campus."
- Israel Ortiz, East New York
"They shouldn't be allowed to carry guns. They should be armed with some type of non-lethal weapon like a stun gun, pepper spray - and radios to call for back up. They should always have something to disarm a dangerous individual."
- Eric Ellison, Canarsie
"For the safety of the people, I feel that so many lives got taken at Virginia Tech, they need more metal detectors - and to be aware of people's behavior. And, absolutely, they need guns for safety reasons. What if one of the students brings a gun and starts shooting? They need armed security guards with permits to apprehend that student."
- Robin Freeman, Bushwick
"No, Idon't think it's a very good idea. If you give the guns to security guards, there might be a cluster of gunfire that an ordinary security guard is not trained to handle. The school won't pay to train them. What they need is more police officers on the campus. They are better trained to handle that type of situation."
