Canarsie High School Has A Poet—Now Everyone Knows It
One such poet is Moises Rogers. A senior, Rogers began writing poetry when in the eighth grade and has had a passion for it ever since. Although humble and modest, some praise the poetry he produces. Rogers decided to take his talent to the next step and submitted one of his poems to a writing contest sponsored by the American Library of Poetry and the American Literacy Council, whose main objectives are to encourage students to express their feelings and to give them the opportunity to demonstrate their talent. The best poems se-lected are subsequently published in a book called Excellence, which is a compilation of short stories and poems written by students ranging in grades three to twelve. Rogers’ poem, “Fire Emblem,” which is a description of a beautiful woman, was one of the poems published in a recent edition, which was a major accomplishment for the young man. Rogers explains that his poems are inspired by his own experiences and vivid imagination. He said, in a recent interview, “Poetry, to me, is my heart and soul expressing itself, manifested through words for others to see.” His favorite poets include Sara Teasdale and William Carlos Williams. Rogers is a member of the poetry club at Canarsie High School. When asked if he would like to transform his writing talent into a career, he humbly responded, “I want to be either an English teacher or editor for a major publishing company. I would like to publish a poetry book or two entailing my best poetry.” It is evident that this talented poet may have a successful future ahead of him. His imagination and intelligence may be directly responsible for that triumph. Moises Rogers is another reason Canarsie High School can boast it has produced yet another well-rounded, creative scholar.
