A four alarm fire in a junkyard east of Canarsie on December 20, sent community residents fleeing the scene because of heavy, dense smoke, according to authorities at the scene.

Canarsie’s Ladder 170, Engine 257 and Battalion 58 were joined by three other fire companies to help put out the blaze.

Police from the 75th Precinct stood by and reported that there were apparently no injuries. How-ever, firefighters said some of their personnel suffered from smoke inhalation, but they were treated at the scene and none was taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire is considered suspicious and is undergoing further investigation by city fire marshals.

Thick columns of black smoke rise from auto junk yard on Louisiana Avenue, between Linden Blvd. and DeWitt Avenue just east of Canarsie, last week. Firefighters and police said most of the black smoke was due to burning tires. Peter Puleo
