For the sixth consecutive year, the 41st A.D. Democratic Club in Marine Park and City Councilman Lew Fidler, who represents that and surrounding communities, collected a record number of donations in its annual Toys for Tots holiday drive. More significantly, U.S. Marine staff sergeant David Leonard told Bryan Lee, the political club’s executive director, at the final count last Thursday that they also earned Toys for Tots top status since their collection surpassed a longtime Manhattan-based contributor.

The 2,762 toys recently collected, which topped 2005’s total by more than 350, were part of the millions of toys the U.S. Marines will distribute to needy kids across the nation this holiday season.

Joining Fidler and club members were Borough President Marty Marko-witz and others. Perhaps the most popular guest was Mr. Met, the official mascot for the New York Mets.

In addition to the toys collected from club members and area individuals, donations were made by a wide array of community organizations and local merchants, including the 69th Police Precinct Community Council, the Hebrew Educational Society, the Friends United Block Association, the Avenue L Merchants Association, the Canarsie Courier, the Canarsie Lions and Rev. Nate William’s Rose of Sharon Baptist Church.
