Man Commits Suicide Off Paerdegat Bridge: Police
An apparently emotionally disturbed man died Saturday after he jumped out of a moving car as it traveled over the Paerdegat Basin Bridge on the Belt Parkway and proceeded to jump from the bridge. He landed in the sand on a beach area, police said. Authorities from the 69th Precinct Detective Squad said Titus Dickens, 25, whose home was listed as Wash-ington, D.C. was a passenger in the back seat of a car driven by his father, Edward. His mother, Claire, was in the front passenger seat. Dickens’ parents said they had been in the area visiting relatives in Queens and, while they were traveling east on the highway between Flatbush Ave-nue and Rockaway Parkway, at about noon, their son just suddenly opened the back door and threw himself out of the car. He fell, got up, and ran to the edge of the bridge and jumped, landing on a beach area under the bridge. Witnesses told police the car was traveling “about 25-to-30 miles per hour.” The man’s father said he tried to run to his son before he jumped but was unable to grab him in time, po-lice said. One witness said she saw Dickens’ body in the sand and “he looked like he was dead to me.” Po-lice did not reveal the witness’ name. Emergency Medical Service paramedics tried valiantly to resuscitate the man and took him to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said records indicated Dickens had a past history of mental illness and suffered from bi-polar disorder. He was also battling depression, police sources said.
