Colonial Dutch Christmas Celebrated At Wyckoff House

(Above)Visitors get a brief history lesson from executive director Sean Sawyer.
The historic Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum hosted dozens of visitors last Saturday for the annual St. Nicholas Day event, a celebration of a traditional Dutch colonial holiday.

Among the proceedings to which visitors were treated were a performance of colonial music by Linda Russell, who plays traditional tunes on an 18th century stringed instrument called a mountain dulcimer, a visit from St. Nicholas, AKA Santa Claus, on horseback and his mischievous companion, Black Piet, participating in creating po-manders - or scents - to enhance a room and taste just-warmed apple cider.

Museum director Sean Sawyer said, "We are thrilled to continue this centuries-old tradition at the Wyckoff Farmhouse. We had a great day with lots of kids and their families. We especially want to thank the Canar-sie Courier for its support in promoting this and other Wyckoff House events. We wish a happy holiday to everybody!"
