Husband, Wife Hospitalized After Murder-Suicide Try

When he thought he had killed his wife, an East 87th Street resident put the weapon with which he shot her to his own head and pulled the trigger. Neither died, however, and Inyang Haynes, 33, and her husband, Wayne Haughhton, 44, are now in serious condition in separate borough hospitals.

The tragedy occurred at the home of the common-law husband and wife at 1332 East 87th Street at about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 25.

Neighborhood residents told 69th Precinct police the couple had been arguing for awhile. Detectives who responded to the scene reported that after the man shot his wife once in the eye, he turned the gun on himself and shot himself once in the head.

A loaded handgun was found lying on the floor next to him.

Haynes was taken to Brookdale Hos-pital by Emergency Medical Service paramedics, where she was pronounced in critical condition.

Haughton, who is a school custodial engineer, was brought by EMS ambulance to Kings County Hospital and also pronounced in critical condition.

Detectives said there was no indication of what the couple was arguing about.

They said Haughton could face charges of attempted murder and gun possession.
