Parks Dept. Launches Summer Lifeguard Recruitment Program Parks & Recreation this week announced it will host the first of more than 20 swimming time trials citywide over the next few weeks, marking the first phase of the evaluation process for Summer 2007 lifeguard candidates. To become a municipal lifeguard, candidates are required to successfully complete Parks' free Lifeguard Training Program to begin in January. To qualify for this training program, candidates must: •Be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds with proper form. •Have a minimum of 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other, without corrective lenses. Glasses and contact lenses are not permitted during the eye exam. •Be at least 16 years old when assuming the lifeguard position. Anyone interested in becoming a New York City lifeguard is encouraged to attend an assessment session where they can participate in a time trial that requires each candidate to perform a 50-yard swim that is administered by the Parks Lifeguard School. Qualifying candidates may enroll in the Lifeguard Training Program at that time. Candidates who do not pass the time trials may be invited to attend free swimming clinics, offered by our Lifeguard School for the first time ever. Designed to help candidates improve stroke mechanics where necessary and strengthen conditioning, the clinics will allow candidates who demonstrate improvement the opportunity to re-take the time trial. "Water safety depends on great lifeguards, and while it's starting to get cold, summer will be here before we know it," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Municipal lifeguard jobs now pay at least $11.72 an hour to start for a 48-hour week, and I strongly encourage anyone interested in working as a lifeguard next summer to take the first step and attend a Lifeguard Assessment Session." Lifeguard Assessment Sessions, including time trials, will be held in Brooklyn at the following locations and times: Abraham Lincoln High School 2800 Ocean Parkway •Wednesday, December 6, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. •Wednesday, December 13, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Metropolitan Pool - 261 Bedford Avenue •Friday, December 1, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. •Friday, December 8, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. New Utrecht High School - 1601 80th Street •Monday, December 4, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Harbor School (formerly Bushwick High School) - 400 Irving Avenue •Thursday, November 30, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. •Thursday, December 7, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note that all lifeguard candidates who participate in a time trial must bring a bathing suit, a towel, and a combination lock or padlock.
