'Black Friday' Dollar Van Sweep

Black Friday - the busiest shopping day after Thanksgiving - was a red letter day for the NYPD's Surface Transportation Enforcement Division (STED), which swooped down on illegal dollar vans along Flatbush Avenue, according to State Senator Carl Kruger. A longtime critic of the dollar vans, Kruger accompanied the unit as it issued 182 summonses to van operators in the second annual Black Friday dollar van sweep. In addition to the summonses, 24 vehicles were confiscated and there was one arrest. The sweep took place along the entire length of Flatbush and Utica avenues, from Kings Plaza to downtown Brooklyn. In many cases dollar vans operate without proper licenses, insurance and illegally pick up passengers along MTA bus routes."Similar enforcement sweeps have been done on a regular basis, but we knew that the busiest shopping day of the year would bring success in ridding Flatbush Avenue of the menace of dollar vans," Kruger said. "Van operators should view this sweep as a somber warning." Kruger and Lt. Dennis Mitchell of the NYPD Bus Unit discuss Operation Dollar Van while waiting for truck to tow seized dollar van in background.
