Fourth Of July '04 Murderer Receives 25-To-Life Sentence
By Charles Rogers

Raheem Edwards
A man who murdered a 17-year-old Canarsien on the Fourth of July, two years ago because he "wanted to shoot somebody," was sentenced last week to 25 years to life for the senseless killing.

Raheem Edwards, 26, had been found guilty of killing Daniel Springer, an apparent innocent bystander who was shot while Edwards was engaged in a fight with another man on East 98th Street and Avenue L.

Police said at the time that Edwards and another man became involved in an argument, apparently over a girl, that grew into a fist fight. Springer, who lived near the scene, went to his porch to see what the commotion was and saw Edwards jump into a car and speed away. He returned only moments later, got out of the car and said, "I got to shoot somebody," witnesses told police.

At this time, the victim was in his driveway, directly adjacent to where Edwards was standing, and ran to the backyard in an attempt to flee from the gunman. Edwards pursued the youth and shot Springer twice in the legs and once in the chest.

The killer then ran back to the car and drove away.

Detectives, knowing he was a native of California, eventually traced him to Michigan and Detroit authorities, along with state marshals, got a warrant and picked him up at his home on September 28, 2005 without a fight. He was arrested and at first fought extradition, extending his time in Michigan. But after three days, police said, he waived extradition and was brought to New York to face charges.

The trial was held before Justice Joel Goldberg, who handed Edwards the stiff sentence on November 10 after a trial which lasted only a day, officials said.
