Politicians Notably Absent From CEC 18 Legislative Breakfast

The basement meeting room of the District 18 satellite office on East 95th Street was crowded last Friday morning for Community Education Council 18's legislative breakfast. But there was something essential missing - the legislators!

School District 18 principals, parent coordinators and members of the local CEC board attended and expected to meet, listen and discuss with elected officials, whose respective dis-tricts serve the community's 18 public schools, the short and long term goals for the education of the community's children, as well as the future of local schools.

District 18 administrative assistant Ann Caesar told the Courier last Fri-day that about a week before the break-fast, she invited ten local elected officials, including state senators Carl Andrews, Kevin Parker and John Sampson, state assembly members Diane Gordon, Alan Maisel, Nick Perry and Helene Weinstein, city council members Charles Barron, Lew Fidler and Kendall Stewart. Caesar said she followed up with a phone call to each one the day before the session and spoke to a representative for each elected official to remind them about the breakfast.

As the meeting progressed she expressed her surprise by the number of political no shows. Only Weinstein, who had a prior commitment, sent a representative and by the time Perry, who was a late arrival, showed up, the event was almost over.

Maisel told the Courier he "had a conflict," therefore was unable to at-tend. Fidler said, through his chief of staff, that he "did not get a timely invitation," adding that he only became aware of the meeting the day before it was scheduled and already had a prior commitment.

While nothing of vital significance was revealed during the meeting, which lasted just over an hour, those present had hoped for an opportunity to hear and discuss certain issues and needs with elected representatives.

During the meeting a clearly disappointed CEC 18 president James Dandridge commented, "We wanted to use this forum to make elected officials aware of our needs..." and later added, "Remember the political leaders who felt it wasn't important enough to attend this meeting when you vote next Tuesday."

Among those in attendance were about a dozen parent coordinators and principals from P.S. 114, P.S. 115, P.S. 135, P.S. 208, P.S. 233, P.S. 235, P.S. 244, P.S. 268, P.S. 276, P.S. 279, I.S. 68, I.S. 232, I.S. 252 and I.S. 285.
