Vikings Drop Second Straight In 34-12 Drubbing By Kangaroos
By Jerry Del Priore

Kangaroo running back Owusu Anane (#34) gained over 200 rushing yards, including this TDrun in the fourth quarter, to seal his team's 34-12 victory.
Coming off a crushing defeat to Fort Hamilton High School, the South Shore High School varsity football team knew it had to stay focused and re-silient against Boys & Girls High School last Saturday in order to get back to its winning ways and keep pace in the playoff race.

However, the Vikings were unable to overcome an early 21-6 deficit and lost its second straight game - and its third of the season - 34-12, dropping them to seventh place in the PSAL power points rankings

The Vikings' defense couldn't halt the Kangaroos' offense, which gained a total of 297 yards - 246 on the ground - and averaged over eight yards per carry.

Boys & Girls struck early and first on an 83-yard kickoff return by Kori Brown. Place kicker Andre Walker, who hit 4 of 5 extra points in the game, connected on his first one point after to put the Kangaroos up, 7-0.

South Shore responded with a touch-down run by junior Gerard Colvert to pull the score to 7-6.

However, the Vikings' sloppy play and its inability to stop Kangaroo running back Owusu Anane put the team in a 28-6 half time hole. Anane ran for 200 yards, including two TDs, on 21 carries.

South Shore opened up the third quarter with a touchdown run by Col-vert to close the gap at 28-12.

The Viking defense followed the scoring drive by forcing Boys and Girls to punt the ball away. But quarterback David Legree wound up throwing an interception to kill South Shore's momentum and end any hopes of a comeback.

Anane, who also grabbed an interception, closed out the scoring to end the Vikings agony with his second rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Legree had his worst performance of the season, completing just four of 21 passes for 28 yards with two picks. He ran seven times for 47 yards.

Viking star running back Josiah Pol-lack rushed for 28 yards on four at-tempts before he was sidelined in the first quarter with an ankle injury. Colvert, Devaugh Best and Marcus Figueroa combining for 65 yards on 11 carries.

Vikings head coach Tommy Salvato was understandably dissatisfied by the loss. He concisely summed it up, telling the Courier after the game, "We just didn't play well. It's as simple as that."

South Shore (5-3) travels across the neighborhood on Sunday in their annual game against Canarsie High School (6-2) at noon to finish out the regular season.

For the Vikings this game is more than just for neighborhood bragging rights. A loss could sink them to the lower end of the PSAL standings.
