Everything Is Boo-tiful At Breukelen Houses
By Neil S. Friedman

"Enter if you dare" reads the yellow caution tape surrounding the temporarily spooky area in front of 553 East 108th Street of the Breukelen Houses. However, unless you're faint of heart or are easily frightened, there's really nothing to be afraid of.

For the sixth straight year, Breukelen resident Cynthia Jimenez (pictured below) spent nearly a month of her spare time preparing the surrounding grounds and first floor lobby of the six-story building for a kind of creepy Halloween. With the help of her boyfriend, Michael Cimato, the couple set up a variety of decorations to startle and shock, as well as entertain, young and old local residents. Among the numerous items displayed this year are pumpkins, ghosts, goblins, coffins in a makeshift graveyard, the Grim Reaper, skeletons and cobwebs.

Jimenez said some financial contributions from neighbors help pay the cost of the decorations, most of which are homemade, but she contributes most of the money for something she admits she loves to do.

"My children are grown and have children of their own," Jimenez said, "but I enjoy doing this for the residents of Breukelen and my grandchildren. I'll also throw a party a few days before Halloween this weekend."
