City Shelters Overwhelmed With Kittens And Cats

The city's three animal shelters are overwhelmed with kittens and cats, prompting Animal Care & Control of New York City to offer special reduced adoption rates: it is now $25 to adopt one cat, and $30 to adopt two.

The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, all vaccinations and one free vet visit at a participating veterinarian. These special adoption prices will run through Labor Day.

With school vacation here, AC&C is hoping these numbers might entice families to add a new member, or perhaps two, to their family this summer.

"Cats make wonderful pets, whether one has children or not," said AC&C's Shelter Operations Manager Liz Keller. "But cats' relatively independent nature makes them a great pet to teach children about the responsibility of caring for an animal.

"Cats breed at a time of year that makes the population swell in the spring and summer months," Keller explained.

AC&C will rescue up to 3,000 cats a month in July and August. If members of the household work during the day, then two cats are better than one because they can keep each other company until their owners return home.

All three of the city's shelters are open for adoptions from 12 PM to 7 PM, seven days a week (except major holidays).

For more information on the animals currently available for adoption, you can visit any of the three AC&C Care Centers, visit the Web site at www.nyc-acc.org or call 212-788-4000.
