Macaw Missing From Mill Basin Pet Store Where Dog Was Burned
Turned out it was an unfortunate incident, with regrets and apologies to the dog's owner from the owner of the pet store, the Brooklyn Zoo and Aquarium, on Ralph Avenue. Although store owner Peter Eppolito said the dog, a black and white, three-year-old Shih Tzu named Phoebe, died while being "dried" by a blow-dryer after being groomed, the cause of death is still inconclusive, since no autopsy was performed. Now, the pet store is in the headlines once again. A beautiful, small macaw that belongs to Eppolito's sister, Debbie, has been missing for more than a week. "I named him Hahns and he became a family member right away," she told reporters. Her brother said she had had the bird for about 15 years. A report in the New York Post indicated there was a possibility that the bird had been taken as retaliation for the incident with the burned dog, but Eppolito said he doesn't think so. "I know most of the people around the neighborhood that have an interest in what we do," he said, "and that rules any of that out. And I don't think anyone from the family owning the dog would do it." He said he doesn't know how the little green bird disappeared. Customers of the pet shop said they are familiar with Hahns, who would greet them from the counter with a familiar, "Hello!" One parrot owner named Merrie, who would not reveal her last name, said she would talk to Hahns daily. "He was like the mascot of the store," she said. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of eight-and-a-half-inch tall Hahns is asked to call (718) 251-7386. There is a $5,000 reward.
