I.S. 211 Students Salute Favorite Sport Stars
While many took part in the wearin' o' the green last Friday for St. Patrick's Day, I.S. 211 students celebrated the day by donning jerseys of their favorite professional athletes. Designated "Senior Sports Jersey Day," the halls and classrooms were filled with pupils showing their school spirit by wearing jerseys emblazoned on the back with such popular sports stars' names as N.Y. Yankees Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, N.Y. Mets' pitcher Pedro Martinez, former NBA great Michael Jordan and N.Y. Knicks' Stephon Marbury. The event was part of eighth grade activities, but younger students wore jerseys, too. Photos from the day will be included in the school's 2005-06 yearbook.
"Sports Jersey Day is a fun day at our school," said principal Buffie Simmons-Peart last Friday. "It was obvious many students are Yankee and Met fans, but basketball seemed to be the prevailing favorite today."
