Has anyone noticed that when trying to cross Avenue L and East 91 Street either by foot or car, that there always seems to be vans and trucks parked in front of the True Value Hardware Store? It is impossible to safely cross Avenue L when heading south on East 91 Street, because your view is blocked towards your left side.
There is no crossing guard for the children. How do you expect a child to cross at that intersection when they are forced to go halfway into the street just to see if there is a car coming? That is not fair. Yes, the child can cross at East 92 Street, but what if he or she does not?
Why should this dangerous situation exist for anyone, for any reason? The reason is so that True Value can have their customers load their trucks and vans conveniently!
There have been several occasions when driving south on East 91 Street that I have the front of my car halfway into Avenue L and still cannot see cars coming from the left.
Once I was so involved with looking towards my left for oncoming cars, that I did not notice a woman trying to cross with a baby stroller on my right.
I have spoken with others on this and they have the same impression as I did. This is a very dangerous situation being created by these trucks and vans loading their daily supplies for their businesses. A loading zone was provided for this purpose on East 91 Street, but it seems that it is used for True Value's own personnel use, to load their supplies for the store, and not for the safe loading of customer's vans and trucks.
To add insult to injury, the vans and trucks that park at the curb do not put money in the meters. You cannot have your cake and eat it too!
I have brought this to the attention of the 69th precinct and they said they would take care of the problem.
They have not! This has been going on for at least a year. Something has to be done about this situation before someone is hurt or killed.
Citizens should have the right to safely cross without being impeded by illegal trucks and vans that do not want to be inconvenienced.
