Nine-Month-Old Baby's Death At Day Care Center Still A Mystery
Officials from the city's Medical Examiner's office are continuing to search for the cause of death of 9-month-old Savannah Straker, who passed away Friday at her day care center in Canarsie under unusual circumstances.
According to police from the 69th Precinct Detective Squad, who are investigating the case, the baby was being fed formula by a caretaker at the Land of Tyree Day Care Center at 174 Conklin Avenue at about 10:15 a.m. on September 1 when the woman noticed the child had milk residue on her mouth. Upon closer observation, she realized the baby was not breathing and notified authorities.
The baby was brought to Brookdale Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:36 a.m. by emergency room doctors.
A spokesperson for the medical examiner's officer said that an autopsy was performed on the child, whose home was on Paerdegat 4 Street, and the results "are still pending." Until the results are known, sources said, the local detective unit is keeping the case open. Charles Rogers
