Brizard To Replace Buckery As Region 6 Superintendent

The New York City Department of Education (DOE) yesterday announced the appointment of Jean-Claude Brizard as Regional Superintendent of Region Six. Brizard is Executive Director for Secondary Schools in the Division of Teaching and Learning and has a 20-year career in New York City's public schools that includes working as a teacher, principal at George Westinghouse High School in Brooklyn, and Local Instructional Superintendent in Region Eight.

Brizard will assume his responsibilities on September 1. He follows Gloria Buckery, who announced her retirement, effective August 31, 2006.

Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein said, "I have complete confidence that he will continue to excel in his new role and bring his passion for teaching and learning to the students and staff of Region Six.

"I also want to thank Gloria Buckery for her incredible work over nearly four decades and her commitment to our students. She has positively influenced thousands of young lives across the city. We will miss her and I wish her the best."

Buckery said, "I am proud of our work in Region Six during Children First and pleased that my colleague Jean-Claude Brizard will be leading the Region as we continue to improve public schools in Brooklyn and throughout the city."
