Two Cops Honored For Con Game Arrests
The reason Police Officers Robert Rodrigues and Deidre Clarke received the "Cop of the Month" award from the 69th Precinct Community Council Tuesday evening was not only because of their professionalism and attention to duty, but also because of their compassion for the victim in an alleged con game recently.
The pair was patrolling in a squad car on April 10 when they were told to respond to a call at East 88th Street and Avenue L where a woman who had been scammed out of $8,000 two days previously said she saw the two suspects who allegedly conned her. The woman told Rodrigues and Clarke the two suspects, James Wright and John Hall, had gone into a store on Avenue L and that she was grateful the officers arrived while the suspects were still in the store, noting to them that she was still frightened and hoped the suspects hadn't seen her.
The two officers calmed her down and told her to hide until Hall and Wright came out of the store.
When the suspects emerged, the officers quietly took them into custody. They called for backup and the suspects were taken to the Foster Avenue station house. Detectives at the precinct held a lineup and Hall and Wright were positively identified and arrested and charged with grand larceny.
The police officers, meanwhile, were commended by the precinct's commanding officer, Captain Ralph Monteforte, for the way they handled the situation. Charles Rogers
