High School Students Honored By Region 6
Department of Education Region 6, which includes Canarsie and South Shore high schools, conducted a Celebration of Achievement/Parent Transition Conference last week on the campus of Kingsborough Community College in Manhattan Beach.
The four-hour May 5 event in the college's Marine and Academic Center was to honor special needs students by presenting them trophies to highlight their success during the school year. After the awards ceremony parents had the opportunity to attend workshops dealing with transition issues. The workshops included standards and requirements for a high school diploma, Social Security entitlements and information about programs available to students.
After a breakfast before the presentation of awards, entertainment was provided by the Leon M. Goldstein Jazz and Concert Orchestra, which consists of students in grades 9-12.
Region 6 Special Education administrator Robert Kazanowitz said, "It's our third year doing this. These are graduating special education seniors; some will be going to college, some will be going into the world of work, some will be going into sheltered workshop experiences."
