BURGLARY SPREE SUSPECT NABBED
On March 6, escaping suspect's car obliterated this yard at East 103 Street and Avenue J after it crashed into a parked SUV. Charles Rogers Detectives last week were working on closing a series of "kick in" burglary cases in the 69th Precinct and the 63rd Precinct areas due to what NYPD authorities called "excellent detective work" in securing the arrest of a Queens resident.
According to reports filed at the 69th Precinct, Jifferis Tyler, 43, of 146th Avenue, Queens, was arrested without incident on March 16th by officials of the Brooklyn Division of Parole and Brooklyn South Warrants Unit after they searched a number of locations in Queens where Tyler was suspected of hanging out. They later picked him up at his home.
Tyler was a suspect in the March 6th break-in at a house on Avenue J in the East 80s when he was surprised by a woman who came home while he was in the house. At first he tried to tell the frightened woman he was "a maintenance man," but then bolted out the door to his car and sped east on Avenue J.
The woman flagged down a passing patrol car, which followed the suspect to East 103rd Street where he lost control of his car and crashed into a yard at the corner. He fled on foot and escaped, running north towards Flatlands Avenue.
Sixty-ninth Precinct Detective Sandra Richard investigated the case and was able to identify Tyler, who has a police record, from his car. Further investigation by Richard revealed that Tyler was positively identified in a lineup from two burglaries in the local precinct and one burglary carried out in the 63rd Precinct area. The investigation is continuing, with the possibility of associating the suspect with as many as eight other burglaries within recent months.
Tyler has a criminal record dating back to 1981, including a manslaughter charge.
Anyone who might have been a victim of a "kick-in" burglary or who might have more information is asked to call the 69th Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.
