Brooklyn’s First 24-Hour News Channel Launched
Brooklyn is finally getting the me-dia attention it deserves! Brooklyn, as well as the outer boroughs, usually receives scant coverage from the city’s daily newspapers and electronic media outlets. However, that situation changed on Tuesday when Cablevision launched News 12 Brooklyn to put the borough in the media spotlight. News 12 Brooklyn is now the borough’s exclusive 24-hour news service dedicated to covering the Kings County around the clock and will be available exclusively to Cablevision’s 300,000 Brooklyn customers. News 12 Brooklyn is the latest 24-hour local cable news channel from Cablevision’s News 12 Networks, which operates 6 other news channels in the tri-state area. News 12 Brooklyn will be available on channel 12 and be part of Cablevision’s basic cable package. News 12 Brooklyn promises to offer consummate coverage of news, events and issues affecting the borough and its diverse communities. The channel will provide an alternative to the Manhattan-based “local news” the city broadcast channels, and the national focus of other cable news programming. “News 12 Brooklyn will offer viewers a depth of reporting and a breadth of coverage that is 100 percent focused on Brooklyn and the concerns of Brook-lyn residents,” Tom Rutledge, Cable-vision’s chief operating officer, said, “The launch of News 12 Brooklyn underscores Cablevision’s longstanding commitment to delivering exclusive award-winning programming. We believe that residents of Brooklyn will come to depend on News 12 Brooklyn for the important local news and information that has the most direct and meaningful impact on their daily lives.” News 12 Brooklyn’s headquarters is in Sheepshead Bay. Two additional bureaus are in Canarsie, at 800 East 92nd Street, and Bay Ridge, at 900 60th Street, that will allow news crews strategic access around the borough. The service, with studios in The Bronx, will feature the latest in newsroom, production and news gathering technology. News 12 Brooklyn will have access to the News 12 fleet of satellite and live remote trucks as well as Chopper 12, the only news helicopter in the nation that is owned and operated by a regional cable news service. “News 12 Brooklyn will enable Cable-vision subscribers to receive quality news whenever they need it, at any hour of the day or night,” said general manager and news director Camilo Pombo-Saenz, a 35-year veteran of television news, who will oversee all operations. “It will be well rounded coverage of all the issues and newsmakers in and around Brooklyn, and it will be news you can’t get anywhere else.” News 12 Brooklyn is also featured on the award-winning News 12 Networks Web site, News12.com. Top stories, numbers and links given during the newscast and more will all be available there. Additionally, News12.com features all of the local school and business closings up-to-the-minute dur-ing inclement weather. With a staff of more than 500, News 12 Networks is the largest news operation in the New York metropolitan area.
