Fun For Kids Takes Center Stage At 2005 Kutztown Festival

Ever heard of a barnyard theatre?

Kids who come to the Kutztown Festival know where it is, and they know that this is their place for fun and surprises. During the 9-day festival, dozens of kids sit on bales of hay and enjoy shows and music created just for them on the barnyard stage.

Featured at the barnyard theatre are Ed and Brenda Hanna’s delightful farm animal puppets, as well as cheerful sing- alongs, delightful ventriloquists, story telling, and more. Children don’t just attend - they are invited to participate in all of these activities, and they have a wonderful time. There is plenty of music for kids at the barnyard theatre, too - including songs by Karen Terry Ludwig, fiddles and guitars, a brass band, and accordionist Charlie Scanzello.

This is just the beginning of fun for kids at the 2005 Festival, which runs from July 2 to July 10 at the fairgrounds in Kutztown, PA. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

New this year is a children’s barn with loads of climbing, hiding, sliding and jumping. There are plenty of real barnyard animals at the festival’s petting zoo. Among them are cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, ducks, mules, goats, rab-bits, turkeys and many more friendly critters, all awaiting the smiling faces of boys and girls. And kids can saddle up for pony rides just outside of the petting zoo.

Heard about the “flying swing”? It’s a mule-drawn carousel and the only one of its kind in the country is featured at the festival. Kids love to ride on this carousel, which is an exact replica of what was the most popular children’s ride at country fairs 100 years ago!

The hay maze, the HexExpress (a train fashioned from 55-gallon oil drums, wheels and spare parts), make and take crafts, and unique Pennsylvania Dutch games are all favorites with little kids.

Der Korn Box is the Pennsylvania Dutch equivalent to a sand box. One minor change, however. Instead of be-ing filled with sand, this box is filled with corn kernels!

The Accoustic Roadshow will teach your child (even the grown-up ones) how to play a song on the guitar, and Echoing Heart, a family of musicians will not only involve your child in the music they do, but also how to actually make their own musical instruments!

Kinner Eck is another feature for children. At this eating place, kids discover favorites ranging from peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to hot dogs prepared the way they like them. Pa-rents appreciate the kid size portions and kid size prices, too.

Festival admission for adults is $10, seniors $9. Children 12 and under are admitted free. There is ample free park-ing and free shuttle service from Festi-val parking areas to the fairgrounds.
