Food, games, prizes and music were part of a full day of fun at the third annual Pinkster Carnival hosted by the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum.

The festival, which took place on the museum’s lawn at 5816 Clarendon Road, included an African doll workshop, a performance of traditional Malian music, a slide lecture by AJ Myers on the history of Pinkster and a raffle. Awards were also presented to community members who made significant contributions to the museum over the years. Rockaway Parkway Merchants’ Association’s Herb Premin-ger, who is a member of the Wyckoff House board of directors, and the Can-arsie Courier’s editor Chuck Rogers were among the award recipients.

“We’re grateful to all the merchants and businesses that have supported us. We thank you for helping us grow with the community,” said Sean Sawyer.

Historically, Pinkster was the Dutch Colonial celebration of Pentecost, which marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Christ’s disciples seven weeks after Easter.

In the New Netherlands, Pinkster also celebrated the return of spring and the end of spring planting. The celebration included a full week of music, dancing and gave enslaved Afri-cans a chance to reunite with their family and friends.

“We seek to educate the public about the past while enjoying a modern day Pinkster Carnival in our community,” said Donna Alverenga, Di-rector of Education at the Wyckoff Museum.
