BICYCLIST SHOT ON CANARSIE ROAD
According to authorities from the 69th Precinct Detective Squad, the shooting occurred at about 12:40 a.m. when the 19-year old bicyclist, whose name was withheld, was riding near the three-way intersection at St. Jude Place, Canarsie Road and Skidmore Avenue. He told detectives from his bed in Brookdale Hospital that a black four-door sedan pulled up next to him and one of four men inside began shooting “several” times at him, striking him once in the left thigh. The car then sped south toward the Belt Parkway. The victim said he crawled between two cars in front of a Canarsie Road house until he was sure the car had gone. Neighborhood residents told detectives that they did not see the shooting but they heard the shots and saw the car heading south on Canarsie Road. They called 911 immediately and, along with police, an Emergency Medical Service ambulance arrived and paramedics brought the victim to the hospital. Detectives said the area was canvassed and there were no shells found at the scene. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. The victim had been arrested in 2002 on an assault charge, police said. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call local detectives at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential. Seth Gottfried
