TV Q & A

Q: I caught an episode of “Hell’s Kitchen” on FOX, and I was wondering about the chef who serves as the “host.” Who is he? What’s he done before? Is he well-known in the food world? Cathy G.

A: British chef Gordon Ramsay has a bunch of restaurants that have been awarded an impressive number of Michelin stars (top honors in the culinary world). This reality show, wherein amateur chefs are supervised by Ramsay in a new Los Angeles restaurant he’s opening, comes to us from Ramsay’s home country of England. As you can probably tell, Ramsay takes no prisoners and is brutal as a task-master. However, the lucky winner gets the chance to open his or her own restaurant. Then again, he or she may think twice!

Q: Is there a video available of Pope John Paul II’s funeral? I didn’t get to catch all the coverage, but I’d like to have one for posterity. Where can I get it? Jim C.

A: A three-hour recording of the funeral Mass can be obtained through C-Span (product ID # 186189-1). Look online at www.c-spanstore.org, or call 1-877-662-7726.

Q: I remember watching “Gunsmoke” when I was a kid, and I still catch it on TV in reruns. Tell me, are Amanda Blake and James Arness still alive? Deanna J.

A: Amanda Blake passed away in 1989 when she was 58 years old of liver failure due to hepatitis-C, apparently connected to AIDS. Arness, at 81, is still very much alive and has his own website. In it, he says he’s busy with lots of different projects and charity work. He and his wife, Janet, live in L.A., and are very involved with their three sons and three grandchild-ren.

Q: I was very sad to hear of Bill Bell’s passing. I am a big fan of his two soaps, “The Young and the Rest-less” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” I understand he was involved with the shows up to the very end. True? And what did he die of? Rita C.

A: Unfortunately, Bill Bell had been suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease in recent years and was not actively involved, although his name remained on the credits of the shows in deference to his distinguished career. He was 78 years old.

Q: As a fan of “All My Children,” I’d like to comment on something. It seems to me that there really is a spark between Maria (Eva LaRue) and Zach (Thorsten Kaye). Are they dating in real life? I know Eva is divorced now from John Callahan who played Ed-mund, so I was just wondering.

Linda V.

A: The spark you see is just good acting. Thorsten Kaye is still involved with Susan Haskell, who played Marty on “One Life to Live” once upon a time. LaRue is back on the dating scene, but who she’s dating is not for public consumption.
