The Long Shot By Jim Haver

  • On The Day Of Another Stakes Race,

Again, A Losing Thoroughbred Dared To Face,

While Always Giving Its Best Shot,

At The Track, It Was Known As “The Long Shot”,

    Handicappers Analyses Were Now Done

The Odds For “The Long Shot”, 50 to 1

    This Loser, For Cruising

    Speed, It Lacked

As Its Jockey Spurred It To The Track

They’re Off, The Horses Left The Gate,

For Two Minutes, Bettors Can Hardly Wait

Usually, “The Long Shot”, Is In The Rear,

But Now It’s Leading, How Weird!

The Favorite Bettors Began To Whine

As “The Long Shot” Crossed The Finish Line

For Once It Kept A Champion’s Price,

And Now To Win Its Very First Race.

This Feat, A Lesson For Life,

Those Less Talented, Overcome By Strife,

Can Be Masters Of Their Fate,

As It’s Never Too Late To Be Great.
