Unlucky 13th Omen Hits Grocery Robbed At Gunpoint Last Week

Friday the 13th lived up to its infamous “bad luck” name last week, at least for the owners of a small grocery store on East 92nd Street who were robbed at gunpoint.

According to a report filed at the 69th Precinct, two thieves entered the M-Y Grocery at 9202 Avenue M at about 6 p.m. and pulled out handguns from their jackets and announced, “This is a holdup!”

While one of the robbers ushered two employees to the back of the store and told them to be quiet and sit on the floor, the second man pointed his gun at the store manager and told him to empty the cash register. The thief then stuffed about $1,000 into his pocket, police said.

The two bandits told the store workers not to call, anyone and fled. It was unknown whether they fled on foot or in a car. There were no injuries. The case is being actively investigated by the local detective squad.

The case parallels the robbery of another grocery store around the corner on April 25 when M & J Foods at 9218 Avenue L was robbed, also at gunpoint. In that case, there was apparently only one thief who pointed a gun at an employee, threatening him. He also asked for money from the register. The bandit escaped with about $5,000 in cash, police said. The victim also said he didn’t know whether the man fled on foot or in a car.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to call local detectives at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential. Charles Rogers
