Stroke — By The Numbers
• Each year about 700,000 people have a stroke. About 500,000 are first attacks and 200,000 are recurrent attacks. • 50-70 percent of stroke survivors regain functional independence, but 15-30 percent are permanently disabled. • In 2005, it is estimated to cost the U.S. just over $56.8 billion for stroke-related medical costs and lost productivity. • Blacks have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes when compared with whites. • Non-Hispanic blacks ages 35-54 have four times the relative risk of stroke than that of whites.
