Mayor Opens New Cancer Center At Maimonides

Mayor Bloomberg speaks at opening of Maimonides Cancer Center.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, City Council Speaker A. Gifford Miller, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Martin D. Payson, Maimonides Chairman of the Board, Pamela Brier, Maimonides President, and Jay S. Cooper, MD, Director of the Cancer Center, at last week’s official opening of Brooklyn’s first comprehensive cancer center, which is now substantially complete, at Maimonides Medical Center.

The Radiation Oncology Center is the newest addition to the $42 million Maimonides Cancer Center, located at 6300 Eighth Avenue, approximately one mile from the main campus. When complete, the Maimonides Cancer Center will be the first facility of its kind in Brooklyn, representing an unprecedented investment in improving cancer care and treatment for the borough’s 2.5 million residents.

“There are 50,000 new cancer diagnoses and 4,500 cancer deaths in Brooklyn each year. Many borough residents are medically underserved and do not have financial access to first-rate cancer care,” said Pamela Brier. “At Maimonides we are committed to remedying that situation.”

Ms. Brier added, “We are extremely grateful for the help we have received from the City of New York. I particularly want to acknowledge the Speaker and the members of the Brooklyn Delegation of the City Council, as well as the New York City Department of Health under the leadership of Dr. Tom Frieden – an outstanding public servant – and Mayor Bloomberg, who has shown an extraordinary commitment to public health issues. By ensuring the allocation of much-needed funds, they have shown just how much they care for their neighbors.” Five million dollars in funding support for the new facility has been provided to Maimonides by the New York City Council.

Martin Payson said, “Together with the Women’s Center, which opened last year, the completion of the new Radiation Oncology Center brings us even closer to the completion of our full cancer center. At the new Maimonides Cancer Center, our patients will have access to the most advanced technologies and state-of-the-art equipment available in the region. And they will have it under one roof in an accessible, comfortable setting.”

Dr. Jay Cooper, Director of the Cancer Center and a nationally recognized radiation oncologist, said, “This newest facility demonstrates once again that Maimonides is committed to bringing the finest state-of-the-art medical environment to Brooklyn residents. Cancer patients and their loved ones deserve the safest and most complete cancer care, provided by a team of highly skilled and compassionate professionals.”
