Holy Family Church

The Youth Group is sponsoring Game Night, Friday, February 25th from 6:00 PM to 9:00PM. Come and enjoy board games, card games, Bingo, video games (Playstation, Xbox, Gameboy...etc) Refreshments will be served. Each one, bring one.

Parish Penance Service Wednesday, March 9th at 7:30 PM.

Our Second Collection, March 6th, will be for Catholic Relief. Formerly the American Bishop’s Overseas Appeal. Your donations to this collection will be used by the Diocese to provide emergency aid and disaster relief funds, health and education programs and much more for our brothers and sisters overseas. Please be generous.

Your envelopes for the Easter decorations are in the February mailed packages and in back of the church. Please return them in any collection to help decorate our church for Easter. Stations of Cross with teens will be Friday, March 18th, 7:30 PM.

Communion Calls: Please notify the rectory regarding anyone ill, elderly or confined to the home who would like to receive the sacraments.

Our Lady Of Miracles

During lent, our church will be open all day, each Monday of Lent, for visits to the Blessed Sacrament until the Novena to Our Lady of Miracles & Benediction at 8:00 PM. Our pantry is always in need of food. At this time we are also in need of canned items such as sweet potatoes, white potatoes, applesauce and sliced peaches. Of St. Jude

Bi-Lingual Masses: The 12:30 PM Mass is our Bi-lingual Mass. The first reading, the psalm and some of the hymns will be in the language of the day. Tagalog/English, February 27th English.

Stations of the Cross: There will be Stations Of the Cross on Friday, February 25th at 7:30 P.M. in the church.

We congratulate our young people who received First Penance last Saturday. Please pray for them as they get ready to receive Holy Communion in May.

The Holy Name Society is once again sponsoring its annual “Basket of Love” Easter outreach program for needy families in our community. Parishioners are asked to bring Easter baskets, stuffed toys, grass and candy to the church office. May we please count on you once again to assist us in this most worthy cause?

The parishes of Canarsie will have a Lenten Mission the week of March 7th at Holy Family Church on Flatlands Ave. and Rockaway Pkwy.

The Pro-Sanctity is sponsoring a weekend retreat “Praying with the Gospel of Matthew” in the light of the Liturgy with Msgr. Msgr. John Delendick will be giving a reflection on the Gospel of John on Friday, February 25th, March 4th and March 11th after the 8:45 A.M. Mass. All are welcome. Please remember to bring your bible.

There will be Family Penance Services on Saturday, March 5th for children and families in St. Jude School and Religious Education Program: 11:00 A.M. will be for grades 3, 4, 5 and 1:30 P.M. will be for grades 6, 7, 8. Our Lenten Penance Service will be on Wednesday, March 23rd at 7:30 P.M. There will be scripture readings, reflection and time for individual confessions.

The Mass schedule on Easter Sunday will be 8:30 A.M., 10:00 A.M., 11:30A.M. and 1:00 P.M.

Those in our R.C.I.A. will be doing their 1st Scrutiny on Sunday, February 27th at the 10:30 A.M. Mass. Scrutinies are a time of deeper spiritual purification to prepare those who will be receiving sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

On Sunday, February 27th after Holy Communion at each Mass, we will invite anyone who had a Birthday during this month come forward to receive a Birthday Blessing.

Blood Drive: On April 10th our parish is sponsoring a Blood Drive for the New York Blood Center. We all know how important it is to donate blood and give the gift of life. Watch our column for more details. Call the rectory if you wish to set up an appointment (718) 763-6300 and speak to Ruth.

Young Adults: The young Adults of Canarsie (20’s early 30’s) will be having “God and Good Food”. This is a gathering for 3 weeks to discuss our Catholic faith over a meal. It will be on Friday, February 25th and Friday, March 4th at the Knights of Columbus Hall on East 94th (btwn Ave K & Ave L) from 7:30 P.M. to 10:00 P.M.

Abstinence: The Church requires all the faithful who have reached their 14th year to abstain totally from meat on ALL FRIDAYS of Lent.

Fasting: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the fasting regulation on Good Friday.

Fasting involves limiting oneself to one full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day.

Easter Duty: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for good reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year. The Easter Season begins at the Vigil on Holy Saturday and concludes with the celebration of Pentecost.

St. Joseph/St. Patrick Dance: The Third Annual St. Joseph / St. Patrick Dance will be held on Saturday, March 19th at 8:00 pm in the Parish Hall.

The Scripture Faith Sharing Groups began to meet for their Lenten Session last week.

The theme for this session is “The Eucharist” and the groups will be discussing the history of the Eucharist, different aspects of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, as well as Eucharistic Devotions. The final baseball registration will be held on Monday, February 28th, Tuesday, March 1st and Tuesday, March 8th from 7pm to 8 pm in the Parish Center Teen Room.

Candle lighting for Friday evening Parshas Tzaveh is 5:25 PM. Services begin with Mincha at 5:35 PM. Shabbos morning services begin at 9:00. This week’s kiddush is hosted by the Aaron, Goldberg and Feinstein families in honor of their parents and grandparents, Edith and Irving Kasendorf and the congregation is cordially invited to participate.

Shabbos afternoon youth groups for boys meet at 4:55. All youngsters are invited. Mincha services will be at 5:25 followed by seudah shlishis sponsored by synagogue. Shabbos ends with Maariv and Havdala at 6:32PM.

Services this coming week each evening at 5:30PM. Monday and Thursday mornings at 6:20, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:30am and Sunday at 8:00. We ask all to make every effort to attend services as often as possible during the winter months since many congregants take winter vacations at this time.
