Grand Jury Releases Man In Rockaway Parkway Homicide
By Charles Rogers

A descendant of one of Canarsie’s oldest families breathed a sigh of relief last weekend when he found he was exonerated of all guilt in a homicide two weeks ago on Rockaway Parkway.

According to a spokesman for District Attorney Charles J. Hynes, a grand jury found “no true bill” against Victor Skidmore, 45, of 1376 Rockaway Parkway in citing whether he deliberately killed Robert Howell, 35, during an argument outside Skidmore’s apartment on the third floor above the Subway Restaurant near Farragut Road on Saturday, February 12.

The district attorney’s spokesman, Sandy Silverman, said the grand jury met on Friday, February 18 and deliberated for “a short time” on the case, finding Skidmore had acted in self defense when he stabbed Howell after the victim struck him on the head several times with an iron pipe during an argument.

In an exclusive interview with the Canarsie Courier, Skidmore said he felt “completely relieved.”

“I knew I would be exonerated,” he said. “The guy came at me and hit me in the head with the pipe a lot of times.”

Skidmore, who is a descendant of John and Walter Skidmore, for whom some streets in Canarsie are named, said he had been in trouble before, “and that’s probably why the police questioned me so much.” But he said all his problems were relatively minor. When it was reported he served 15 months recently, he said the report was mistaken, and should have read 15 days.

“It was for a minor criminal mischief offense,” he said. “I’ve never committed a felony and there’s no way I could serve 15 months for anything.”
