PS 115 Pupils Get Physical With Help Of CHS Varsity Hoopsters

Students watch Canarsie High School’s basketball team’s starting five and head coach Tom Allen go through pre-game warm-up routines.
With too many of the nation’s younger population recently weighing in with excess pounds, physical education is slowly becoming as vital as academics in America’s elementary schools.

At. P.S. 115 on East 92nd Street, under the leadership of Principal Mitch Pinsky, the school has continued it’s tradition of physical activity, along with the vital, three standard Rs — reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic. An additional benefit of this strategy is money raised by the youngsters for the American Heart Association.

As a preview to this week’s events — Hoops for the Heart and Jump Rope for the Heart — scores of fourth and fifth graders assembled in the school gymnasium last week to “get physical” with Canarsie High School varsity basketball players and cheerleaders in preparation for the two fund-raisers, after which all proceeds are donated to the American Heart Association.
