Cops Warn About Area Car Break-Ins

Police from the 69th Precinct are warning area residents to not only lock up their cars overnight, but to make sure no valuables are left in them, including in the trunk.

“Lately we have been getting quite a few complaints from residents that cars have been broken into overnight,” said Captain Ralph Monteforte, commanding officer of the local precinct. “In several instances, they say that someone has broken into their car, rifled through the glove compartment and even in the trunk and come away with valuables, including purses and wallets, not to mention cameras and other items.

“Remember, merely covering up valuable articles just won’t do it.” He noted that the thefts took place mostly in the vicinity of the Paerdegats and East 80s and stated that, although the area is under normal patrol surveillance, Anti-Crime Unit officers in unmarked cars are also traversing the streets.

Monteforte said residents should contact Crime Prevention Officer James Trotta, at 1-718-257-6205, to sign their vehicles up for anti-theft programs, such as V.I.N. etching, where identification numbers are etched into the car. Charles Rogers
