Lady Chiefs Rebound After Sloppy Loss To Lady Wolves The Canarsie Lady Chiefs rebounded from an inexcusable loss to Grand Street Campus last week as they defeated George Westinghouse High School on the road last Friday, then disposed of Paul Robeson High School at home on January 11. Tuesday’s game against Brooklyn’s 2A Division Robeson (5-5) began in similar fashion to the Grand Street game in which the Lady Chiefs committed over 30 turnovers and played a sloppy game. Canarsie (6-4) found themselves down 8-6 with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter, due mostly to careless passing and an overall inability to break Robeson’s tough press. Canarsie head coach Robert Greenblatt called a timeout at that point and told his girls that it was time they got their “heads out of the clouds” and concentrate on beating a team with which they should conceivably have no problem. The pep talk obviously had a positive effect as Canarsie rattled off 11 unanswered points. The defense clamped down as well and held Robeson to only six total points in the second quarter to take a 34-18 lead at the half. “We are notorious for starting slow, no matter who we play,” said Greenblatt. “I hope I can finally get my girls to come out with some intensity to begin the game by the time this season is over.” The Lady Chiefs continued their strong play in the third quarter with a 13-0 run and finished with an impressive 66-45 victory. Sophomore Wykeemi Gray led Canarsie with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Shanai Norman helped out with 11 points. Friday’s game at Westinghouse (2-7) was a scoring fest for Canarsie as four Lady Chiefs scored in the double digits. Gray led Canarsie again with 31 points and 20 boards. Sharee Vielot added 20 points and 7 assists; Shantel Dunston had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Norman added 11 points.
