Canarsie Included In Citywide “Take A Walk, NY” Health Program Canarsie has been included in a program sponsored by the city’s Department of Health and the Neighborhood Open Space Coalition where participants will take “a walk for health while exploring parts of the city,” according to officials. The Canarsie tour is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 10 and will be the third in a series, called “Brooklyn Walks!” co-sponsored by the Greater Southern Brooklyn Health Coalition and the State Department of Health’s Healthy Heart Program. The first Brooklyn tour will be held on Saturday, January 22, encompassing Jamaica Bay: Sheepshead Bay to Floyd Bennett Field. Participants will meet guides on the street level at the Sheepshead Bay Road subway station. The second walk will be a tour of Victorian Flatbush and will take place on Sunday, February 13. The “Take a Walk, New York!” program is open to everyone. Participant meet at a different location in one of the five boroughs to explore a new neighborhood. The walk is free, and usually takes 2-3 hours. For more information and scheduled walks go to www.walkny.org or call 212-228-3126. At the end of their first walk, participants receive a “Take a Walk, New York! Passport; thereafter for every walk completed, a “visa” stamp representing that walk is issued. The biggest rewards for participating in “Take a Walk New York!” are feeling healthy and exploring this beautiful city! Engaging in regular moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking for a half hour on most days, substantially reduces your risk for cardiovascular disease: New York’s #1 preventable killer of both men and women. Cardiovascular disease includes heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Regular physical activity can also help prevent diabetes and some cancers, and help you get fit, release tension, and feel more energetic.
