Pets have truly become members of the family. Sixty seven percent of U.S. households have at least one dog, cat, bird, or other companion animal. Many have more than one. Other surveys show that 80 percent of pet guardians are willing to risk their lives to save the life of a pet.

Pets have become very important to us. They provide companionship, joy, unconditional love, a sense of safety, and sometimes even a service. Pets are fun to be with because they make us feel good and studies show pet guardians tend to be healthier!

Your pet experience will be the most satisfying when you take the time to consider which pet best suits your family. You should start by gathering pet specific information and advice. This process doesn’t take long and it is educational and fun, especially for children.

A pet is a daily responsibility, so it is important that you make an informed decision. Don’t let the playfulness of the first puppy or kitten you see or the latest “movie popular” pet lure you into accepting a responsibility that your family is not ready for.

Millions of unwanted pets are put to death each year in the United States. Pets selected on impulse, “for the children,” or as a gift sometimes end up unwanted or abandoned. Millions of shelter pets once belonged to people who fell in love with them who later changed their minds.

Selecting a pet is a family project and everyone’s needs, concerns, fears, and medical history (including allergies) should be considered. Family members should decide together what kind of pet they want, the amount of time they can devote to it, and the amount of responsibility each person is willing to assume. Be honest. Promises from some family members, particularly children, may not be fulfilled.
