Thoughts For The New Year
Eye On C’Bean Community

Happy New Year.

When I was a little girl, the year 2005 was not a year that I thought about. Even as a young adult, 2000 and beyond seemed a mythical time and by the time we got there I’d be older than dirt. But alas, 2000 is real. And it does make me feel old, particularly at times when I catch myself using the same phrases and buzz words I heard my mom, my grandma, my great grandma and aunts use. I am getting old, I’ll say to myself.

Gosh, old! That has tones of worn out shoe, tattered clothing. Old…once upon a time in the near past, it would give me a chill but age comes with wisdom and graciousness.

Several years ago, I stopped making New Year’s resolutions and started setting goals instead. My resolutions had a tendency to fizzle away shortly after the month of January or in close proximity thereof. What I found was by writing down in a planner, my plans for the year and laying out the method by which I was going to accomplish each plan, by the end of the year I achieved most of the things I planned at the beginning of the year. The goals I was unable to reach are transferred to the New Year, at the top of the list.

This exercise is changing my life. One goal I know most people, women specifically make each year, is weight loss. For some reason or reasons, this pitters out for 95% of them after the words leave the lips. One of the keys to achieving goals no matter how big or small is writing out the goal(s) accompanied by a plan of action. If you have a plan and no plan of action to set into motion, the plan is just a plan and will remain a plan until action is taken to move the plan into reality. It is not EASY! First you must believe in you and your plan. You must be relentless in achieving the goals in the plan. Additionally you’ve gotta become tenacious and unfettered. Nothing is BAD LUCK…it is a challenge; accept the challenges. Challenges test the development of your plan(s); make you stronger and your plans more solid. Find a way around, over, under the challenges that arise. Listen to your heart ….your gut instincts are great indicators of how you progress. Believe in you…. Get a mentor/cheerleader. Move away from detractors and negative vibes.

This is my New Year’s advice…whatever your new year’s resolution…stick with it and make it a reality. Remember it is not EASY and it is not BAD LUCK. With this in mind, HAPPY NEW YEAR readers; I wish you a year of peace, joyousness, good health and blessings of all kind. To share one of the goals I’ve been working on is a Brooklyn Caribbean Youth Fest 2005©. Four years in the making, it is finally at the top of the list.

Community, I look forward to your support as the marketing campaign goes into full motion. Some of you probably heard about it already. Our youth needs our help to move forward and represent the power of Caribbean Immigrants.

One love…
