Detectives Nab Two Suspects In Separate Shooting Incidents
By Charles Rogers

Detectives from the 69th Precinct Detective Squad made two significant arrests last week, both closing cases of shootings in the local area stemming back to last September.

The first case concerned a teenager who was shot in the face in front of his building in the BayView Houses complex on September 3, 2004. Suspect Terrel Norman, 18, who lives in an apartment in the project, was arrested on January 5, 2005 in his home.

Lt. Dennis McCreight, who heads the local detective squad, said the 16-year-old victim, whose name was not released, called police from his apartment, also in the project, but in a different building than the suspect and told them he had been shot in the face by a man who tried to rob him. “He said he had been shopping at a supermarket shortly after midnight and was returning to his home when he was confronted by the suspect, who asked him for money,” McCreight said.

The young victim began to argue with Norman when the suspect took a gun from his pocket and allegedly fired one shot at the teenager, striking him in the face. The youth was able to get to his apartment and relatives called police and an ambulance. He gave a tentative description of his attacker and detectives took it from there. Norman, whose nickname is “Taz,” police said, was charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

The second arrest last week concerned another shooting, this time nearer the end of the month. The suspected assailant, police said, is Craig Green, 26, of East 51st Street, who was picked up December 29th, 2004 after barricading himself in his apartment.

The 31-year-old male victim had been walking on East 79th Street near Glenwood Road on September 27 in broad daylight when he was shot four times, with the bullets coming from a passing car. Witnesses and the victim told police a late model Nissan Maxi-ma pulled up next to him, the windows were rolled down and an un-known number of passengers started shooting at him. Neighbors ran to his aid as the car sped north on East 79th Street. Police later found ten shells from a .40 caliber automatic pistol and a .22 automatic in the street.

A neighbor pulled the victim into his car and took him to Brookdale Hospital immediately after the shooting and, although the man was shot in the head, hip, shoulder and back, his wounds were not life-threatening, police said.

After questioning witnesses and investigating the case, detectives came up with a description of Green and, when they went to pick him up, he barricaded himself in his basement apartment. SWAT Emergency Service Unit cops surrounded the house and Green gave up without incident. Lieutenant McCreight said two weapons matching the description of the guns used in the attack were discovered in Green’s car. He was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
