Learn the basics of food safety and how to have a healthy diet with a package of publications from the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Federal Citizen Information Center. Use the publications in the Look Before You Cook package to get practical tips on protecting your kitchen from bacteria that can causes food-borne illnesses. Clean cutting boards and counter tops with hot soapy water each time you begin preparing a new food item, and keep foods separate so that the juice from your raw chicken doesn’t get onto the salad greens. Learn the importance of cooking your food to the recommended temperature. Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of your favorite foods, including hamburgers, pork chops and chicken breasts.
