Breukelen Tree Lighting Dec. 18th The public is invited to attend a giant Tree Lighting Celebration at the Breukelen Community Center, 715 East 105 Street, on Sunday, December 18 beginning at 4 p.m. Open to all ages, the fun-filled event will feature holiday caroling, food, entertainment and — you guessed it — Santa Claus.

“Goody Bag” For Troops In Iraq The Holy Name Society of Mary Queen of Heaven Church is conducting a “Goody Bag” drive to send items they need but have trouble getting to the troops in Iraq, especially at this time of the year. Items needed include foot powder, baby wipes, toothpaste, insect repellent, beef jerky, disposable razors, etc. There are boxes at the doors of the church for the items to be placed. Need Volunteers At Floyd Bennett Friends of Gateway, a volunteer organization, has been conducting various projects and programs with the National Parks Service for more than 20 years. They dedicate themselves to improving and enhancing public awareness of Gateway’s natural and historic areas. Currently, they have volunteer openings for adults interested in working with either school children or disabled adults to teach them how to grow plants. They are also looking for retirees who are interested in volunteering to help maintain tools and machines for their workshop. Maimonides Needs Blood Donors The blood bank at Maimonides Medical Center, like all blood banks in the region, is currently experiencing a severe blood shortage, especially of Type O-Positive and O-Negative blood.
