Starrett Programs Develop Sound Minds & Bodies

By Delia Bray

John Locke said, “A sound mind in a sound body is a short but full description of a happy state in this world.”

The Starrett Judo Club and the Saturday Academy believe in that philosophy and offer opportunities to develop both mind and body with after school programs held at I.S. 364, 421 Freeport Loop. Once restricted to Starrett at Spring Creek residents, the programs are now open to everyone.

“Learn and train with the very best” is the motto of the Starrett Judo Club and Saturday Academy. Indeed, the Judo Club seems to have the very best in Coach Parnel Legros, a former judo Olympian who has been a physical education instructor for 27 years.

Legros stresses the development of self-confidence, discipline and physical fitness through judo. The word ‘judo’ is Japanese for “the gentle way,” and the coach’s “gentle way” is apparent in his teaching methods and his devotion to his students.

“I had it rough growing up. I always tell my kids stories of my life and things I’ve seen. My concern is not to see them go that route,” he said.

The route that Legros’ judo class is taking is international in scope. The students have an opportunity to travel all over the world. Two of them, twins Gary and Harry St. Leger, 20, have been students for 11 years. The brothers emphasize the life-changing aspects of the club and the opportunity to engage in international competition.

“Judo has changed my life,” said Henry. “I travel and meet new people and have friends around the world.”

Gary said he has learned to coordinate his judo schedule with his school work.

Eleven-year-old John Tucker, has been attending the club for four years and hopes to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He said, “Judo has taught me to stand up for myself and disciplined me to respect others.”

The respect, discipline, and self-confidence that Legros instills in his students are, he pointed out, also traits necessary to be successful in the academic world. The Saturday Academy is dedicated to fostering those traits and developing sound minds. This unique academic program is run by Akail Bello. This “Cool School,” as the Saturday Academy is also known, helps children to improve their math, reading and test-taking skills. The school also offers an enrichment program for academically advanced children. All the instructors are highly trained educational professionals.

So, if you are looking to develop a sound mind in a sound body, call the Starrett Judo Club and The Saturday Academy at Spring Creek at 1-718-240-4530. Classes for the Saturday Academy start October 15.
