“He could have warned them more, evacuated the city. Everybody in New York would have been evacuated in time. There’s really no excuse for not acting sooner and more responsibly.”
Sharlett Spilleri, Brownsville Question: From what’s been reported by the media, do you think the mayor of New Orleans has done a good job or acted irresponsibly since Hurricane Katrina devastated his city?
|“I think he was irresponsible, because there were a lot of poor people without cars, without money who couldn’t get out of the city. They didn’t do anything about that. Then they just put the blame on FEMA. But in that regard, he was the one who acted irresponsibly.”
Diana Gonzalez, Canarsie“I think he did a good job, the best he could. But his hands were tied. And he couldn’t say anything he wasn’t told to say. They tried to make him look stupid. FEMA and the governor were telling him what to say, giving him mixed instructions.”
L. Pernell, Canarsie“He could have done better. They were warned about the hurricane. The mayor and the President, acted as though they didn’t really know it was coming. Why did it take so long for the mayor and the president to take action, to get those people help?”
