Question: Do you think it should be mandatory for participants in next month’s West Indian American Day Parade to wear costumes? Why?

“I think so, because they need it to show their heritage. Every parade has people in their native costumes, so why not the West Indian Day Parade?”

Everybody should be allowed to participate regardless of whether or not they have a costume. Some people don’t have the money to buy a costume.” Mary Andrews, Canarsie“I would say no, it should not be mandatory. It’s a day of celebration. Because, as with any parade, that’s the tradition. I mean, that’s what people look forward to. It brings out the spirit of West Indian pride.” William Sutherland, Canarsie“I think so. It is a public event, but basically you should be able to go any way you feel is appropriate for the parade.” Aaron Tussing, Canarsie“I think they should dress any way they like.
