Flatlands Podiatry: A Step In The Right Direction

By Felice Baker

The Flatlands Podiatry Office has been caring for Canarsie’s foot problems since 1981. Dr. Steven Suran, who founded the practice, left two years ago to pursue other goals, leaving the office, which is located at East 93rd Street and Flatlands Avenue, in the care of Dr. John Pawson, who has since continued to maintain a friendly and professional atmosphere for his clientele.

As expected, Dr. Pawson treats all foot ailments, including ingrown toenails, fungus nails, heel spurs, bunions, hammertoes, sprains, fractures, corns and calluses and sports related injuries. Dr. Pawson also makes custom molded orthotics. The office is equipped with superior technology, such as the arterial doppler, which evaluates circulation, X-ray ma-chines, which are able to diagnose fractures and arthritic conditions, and physical therapy equipment, which provides whirlpool, ultra-sound and electrical stimulation. However, patients can also expect a highly personalized experience.

“I like to spend time with the patients, not just rush them in and out,” says Dr. Pawson, “I want to treat my patients like people, not items on an assembly line. I try to keep the time spent in the waiting room to a minimum. I want to make their visits as pleasurable and satisfying as possible.” Dr. Pawson also makes house calls and so much quality care readily extends to the homes of patients whose conditions make it difficult to travel.

Dr. Pawson also specializes in the diabetic foot condition, in which high glucose levels affect the small nerves in the feet and cause foot numbness, also known as diabetic neuropathy. Patients with this condition are especially vulnerable to injury, foot ulcers and limb-threatening infections and require frequent foot examinations. Dr. Pawson treats these conditions with antibiotics, wound care and surgical debridements. The office also offers custom molded inserts and diabetic shoes to those patients requiring protective and supportive shoe gear.
